This Christmas I sat in a small room filled with Sri Lankan and Nepali men and women. Some Muslim, some Christain, and some claimed a combination of multiple religions. But no matter what their background was, they all have one thing in common- brokenness and the desire to belong. Behind the sweet smiles and hugs, I see eyes that are empty and searching. Living in Cyprus I have seen more racism and mistreatment then anywhere else. For many, this is their first Christmas. A few gifts were handed out. Through the mumbling of different languages, I made out the words of the young Muslim man in front of me saying, “This is my first Christmas present.”

My heart stopped. I never heard someone say those words. Yes, I know there are thousands of people who have never celebrated Christmas or will ever receive a gift. But what hit me so hard was I had spent every Christmas I can remember surrounded by the comfort of family, tradition, and the oh so wonderful American food when I didn’t realize how much greater the joy is when I am stripped of this and put into a room where the anticipation of Hope is being introduced for the first time. Its brand new. It’s Christ breathed. It captures the aching hearts.

It’s moments like this that I am very very thankful for what this season truly means. It's a season of anticipation and unlike what we often feel, it does not pressure us into a failing attempt at perfection. It's not about pretty decorations or just family gatherings- it goes much deeper than that. Sometimes it’s broken, it’s messy, and it’s inconvenient. But within these walls holding so many hurting and empty lives, excitement can’t help but fill the air. We sit in a circle speaking of the new born King. Holding onto the belief that what is empty will be filled, what is broken will be repaired, and what is lost can always be found, no matter how many times it is lost-- For there is a coming Hope.

“For to us a child is born,

to us a son is given;

and the government shall be upon his shoulder,

and his name shall be called

Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,

Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Of the increase of his government and of peace

there will be no end.”

- Isaiah 9:6-7
